In 2005, white extremist Reverend Franklin Graham blamed Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans’ supposed “Black spiritual cloud” and “voodoo”. Just last year, right-wingers like Utah State Representative Phil Lyman blamed the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse on DEI, even though the actual cause was the giant fucking cargo ship we all watched crash into the bridge.

Whether it’s pestilence, pandemics or even wars, blaming Black people for disasters in this country is nothing new. The only thing that seems to change is the language and “DEI” is the dog whistle of choice for our current cohort of dipshit bigots—and they’ll blame it for everything from the collapse of bridges to the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank to goddamn doors blowing off planes.
