Learning Black history
And the cost of not knowing
Learning Black history can change a person’s taste. For example, at first glance Cormac McCarthy’s The Road is a singular post-apocalyptic story about a father and son traversing a desolate and unrecognizable world, seeking a safe haven and desperately trying to avoid gangs of cannibals. But, if you already know about slavery and the Underground Railroad and story after story after story of white people cannibalizing enslaved Black people, it can be difficult to feel entertained by that kind of narrative.
