Forty-two percent of households in my home state of Maine can’t afford basic needs. It’s a shocking number, but it’s right in step with the rest of the country. Now, you will hear from many post-election pundits – including fellow Mainer and Historian Queen of Substack Heather Cox Richardson – that “the economy is objectively good” and that “inflation is down” and job numbers and “real wages” are up. These are claimed to be the cold, hard facts and any understanding otherwise is surely the effect of right-wing online propaganda.
