Edward A. Ross was a popular and respected professor of economics at Stanford University. But he’d been labeled “controversial” and was asked to resign. Many faculty members were outraged and came to his defense. Several even resigned in solidarity. Ross, of course, went to the media. The year was 1900, so the media wasn’t what it is today, but the result was the same: a loud national debate.
