Even though Sheffield Collins was just a little boy, he knew his place. The oranges had been donated and were technically free, but Sheffield knew to take his from trash. In the end, it didn’t matter. An overseer grabbed the child and accused him of stealing. The penalty would be to box another Black child for overseer amusement. Sheffield refused and so he was whipped with his own belt by the overseer.

This happened in Mississippi, but not during slavery. In fact, more than sixty years had passed since the South lost the war.

And the overseer wasn’t a plantation employee. He was a United States soldier.
