We talk about Hitler’s fascism while leaving out that he was inspired by American Jim Crow laws. We talk about Benito Mussolini as an inventor of fascism without mentioning his national Manifesto of Race that proudly advertised, “Everything that the [Fascist] regime has done so far in Italy is founded on racist principles.”
Our main historical purveyors of fascism were very clear about its definition and purpose. Obviously, the current national confusion on the subject is a privilege Black Americans have never been able to afford. This is why Black trailblazers from Langston Hughes to Angela Davis have been informing us the entire time. So, in the interest of understanding what we’re all up against, here are five brief quotes from past and present Black luminaries that explain it all.
